A brief insight into to Search Engine Optimisation...

Search engines calculate their rankings based on over a hundred different factors. This is called the Algorithm.

In order for a site to be listed (indexed) it needs to be search engine friendly. This means a search engines can 'read' the website contents.

Other algorithm factors include having the 'correct' occurances of keywords and phrases, to more complicated elements such as LSI (latent semantic indexing), internal and external link themes, pagerank distribution, geographical location targeting, anti-spam threshold tolerance and so on.
